It’s not easy. But it is simple. God made everyone. Yes, everyone. Not just people that you like or people like you. Everyone. And so there always must be good to find, or put another way, honor given. The sweeping generalizations we make about others are a disturbing trend in our social discourse. We very quickly judge others as either “good” or “bad.” There’s not much room for a middle ground.

And the truth is, we ALL fall into that middle ground! There isn’t a soul among us who is completely perfect, and there isn’t one that’s all bad either. We all have dark places that need to be converted. And we all have goodness within us, simply because we are God’s creations.

So let’s add that to our list of needed daily reminders. Let’s reflect often on the truth that God knows better than we do about others’ hearts. Let’s worry more about allowing our own hearts to be converted and less about others’ shortcomings or flaws or weaknesses. Let’s stop making others the bad guys to make ourselves feel validated. Let’s accept that we are all on the same team because we all have at least one thing in common: we were created in the image and likeness of God, by God, to know Him, to love Him, and to be loved by Him. So there is a reflection of Him in every person, no matter how different our beliefs or interests or personalities or abilities. Instead of judging, let’s look and see what wonderfully unique thing God is revealing to us about Himself through each of the people He created. Let’s seek Him and find Him in everyone.

At his crucifixion, Jesus gave His Mother Mary to all of us to be our mother. As the perfect mother, Mary sees her Son in all of us. St. Catherine LaBoure was the religious sister to whom Mary revealed herself and the image of the powerful miraculous medal over a century ago, which many have found to be a channel of great grace and a reminder of Mary’s example. May we turn to Our Mother for her help to see our brothers and sisters as she does.
